One of my favorite projects we did in our new home was custom closets, they are such a better use of space and make things super functional. I’m a big fan of staying organized, especially in the closet. Making sure everything has a place and investing in these built ins have just given everything a fresh look.
Honeydew, a local husband and wife team did 4 out of 5 of our closets, but we went with the Ikea Pax System for our most recent addition- the guest room closet turned my closet.
The Art of Closet Organization
1. Declutter First: The first step in any successful closet makeover is decluttering. Go through your clothes and accessories and be ruthless in your decision-making. Donate or sell items you no longer need or wear. This will create more space and make organization much easier.
2. Categorize and Sort: Group similar items together. Sort your clothes by type, season, and color. This will not only make finding what you need a breeze but also give your closet a visually appealing look.
3. Invest in Quality Hangers: Replace mismatched hangers with uniform, slimline hangers. This will maximize space and keep your clothes from slipping off. Consider velvet or wooden hangers for added elegance.
Custom Shelving and Built-Ins vs. Ikea Pax System
For those who crave the ultimate in closet luxury, consider custom-built closets from companies like California Closets. They are an investment but honestly it’s so nice have a completely customized solution without all the hassle. Here’s what they offer:
-
Tailored Design: California Closets provides a personalized design service. They work closely with you to create a closet that fits your style and needs perfectly.
-
High-Quality Materials: You can choose from a wide range of materials, finishes, and accessories to create a closet that matches your aesthetic preferences.
-
Maximized Space: Custom-built closets are designed to make the most of every inch of available space, providing you with ample storage options for clothes, shoes, accessories, and more.
-
Long-Term Investment: While custom-built closets are a higher upfront cost, they are a long-term investment that adds value to your home and can last for years to come.
A More Affordable Option: The Ikea Pax System
Not everyone has the budget for a custom-built closet, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style and organization. I’ve had my eye on the Ikea Pax System for a couple years now so I was super excited to get one for my closet in the guest room!
-
Modular Design: The Pax system is modular, allowing you to mix and match components to create a closet that suits your needs. Choose from various sizes, shelving units, drawers, and accessories.
-
Affordable Price: The Ikea Pax system is known for its affordability, making it accessible to a wide range of budgets. This definitely reflects in the level of quality of the products, they don’t feel as solid as custom built-ins. We switched out the Ikea bar for a regular closet rod on amazon and secured it with screws and haven’t had any issues so far!
-
Sleek Built-In Look: With the right planning and installation, the Pax system can achieve a built-in look that rivals custom-built closets at a fraction of the cost. I love that you can secure the sections together for extra durability and security.
-
DIY-Friendly: Many homeowners opt to install the Ikea Pax system themselves, saving on installation costs. Mike installed mine and it took him a couple hours one afternoon. Ikea also provides online planning tools to help you design your closet.
pro tip: Lighting! Adequate lighting is essential for a well-organized closet. Consider adding LED strips or a motion-sensor light to illuminate dark corners – I love these affordable ones from Amazon.
