Sanibel is one of my favorite places to visit (partially because my Grams lives there) and also because of its beautiful serene beaches and family oriented atmosphere. It’s the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There’s no traffic lights on the island, it’s not very commercialized and at night you can see ALL of the stars. It truly feels like an escape! Hurricane Ian definitely took a toll on the little island but its slowly reopening and coming back to life!
Read below for my recommendations on places to Stay, Eat and What to Do (updated January 2024)
WHERE TO STAY
I suggest staying in Sanibel vs. Captiva Island just because theres more to do and is more convenient. Captiva is too far to bike to stores/restauraunts. When I’m not staying with my grandparents, I stay next door at Sundial Resort, but here are a few more I’d recommend that are open post-Ian:
WHERE TO EAT
Keep in mind most restaurants close by 9 or 10PM and the busiest times of day are from 12:00-3:30 PM. Here are some of my favorite places to eat on the island!
Totally Baked (donuts)
THINGS TO DO
Given most of the island closes around 9:00PM, Sanibel is a VERY family friendly travel destination! If you’re in your 20’s and kid free, definitely plan to head to Fort Myers for a night out or two, but here are some of my favorite daytime activities!
Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve
Shelling on the beach
Biking around the island
Watching the sunset on the causeway
and of course shop!
Beaches Open in 2024:
Bowman’s Beach (great sunset spot)
Tarpon Bay Beach also good for sunset less crowded
FAVE PLACES TO SHOP
Perriwinkle Place Strip center with cute shops and dinning
Sanibel Outlets (off the island, just across the bridge)
Hopefully you found this helpful! If you visit Sanibel or any of these places, tag/send me you pics, I’d love to see!
